This is a CBC interview of Sir Arthur C. Clarke by Canadian Eleanor Wachtel host of CBC's Writer's and Company broadcast.
Clarke has been called an "interplanetary treasure" for his science and fiction writing. He wrote more than 80 books, including the classic 2001: A Space Odyssey. Clarke was an inventor and futurist, as well as an author and broadcaster. He predicted space travel in 1945, long before rockets were tested, as well as the future role of satellites and the advent of the Internet.
Born in 1917, the British writer lived in Sri Lanka since 1956. The recipient of numerous awards and honors, he was nominated for a Nobel Prize in 1994 and knighted in 2000. The Sri Lankan government ordered a minute's silence across the island during his burial.
Of his more than 30 novels, the best known are Childhood's End and 2001: A Space Odyssey (New American Library), which was turned into a highly successful and controversial film by director Stanley Kubrick.
His 1999 collection, Greetings, Carbon-based Bipeds! Essays from 1934 to 1998 (St. Martin's Press), includes essays and photographs that show the extent of Clarke’s influence.
