In 1832 a cholera epidemic raged among Liverpool's Irish immigrant community. Catherine Wilkinson, owner of the only hot water boiler in her street, invited her neighbours to wash their clothes and bed-linen to ward off the disease, eventually giving rise to the creation of public wash-houses.
In David Pownall's reconception of the events, Kitty gradually gets to know the elegant Dr.C.H.Olera.
