In 1918, Noel Pemberton Billing MP published a review of Maud Allan's adaptation of Oscar Wilde's "Salome" accusing the leading actress of treason. The resulting libel trial, which allowed Billing to air his views that hundreds of high officials were being blackmailed by Germany, was a magnet for the press and a concern for Lloyd George's government as it sought to rally support for the war.
