Country Girl by Edna O'Brien

Renowned Irish writer Edna O'Brien reads the first of five extracts from her memoir, in which she recalls her childhood in 1930s Co Clare, and her strict Catholic upbringing. She begins by detailing her early years, spent in the faded grandeur of her family home.

3) The author begins work on her debut novel, The Country Girls, which was published in 1960 and depicts the lives of two young women in Ireland, and took only three weeks to write.

 

4) The author enjoys literary success in 1960s London following the publication of her novel The Country Girls, but with stardom a bitter end to her marriage also looms.

 

5) The author enjoys socialising in New York. When she returns to London, her thoughts return to the past.
