Spellbinder (AUS)

Spellbinder is a 1995 fantasy teen drama/science fiction television series, produced by Film Australia & Telewizja Polska in association with the Australian Children's Television Foundation.

The series is a 1995 serial of 26 episodes, co-produced between Australia and Poland. It was also novelized by the creators, Mark Shirrefs and John Thomson.

Summary: Paul Reynolds finds himself transported to a parallel world after a school prank with his best friend Alex goes wrong. He finds himself trapped in the land of the Spellbinders and finds a reluctant village girl named Riana to help him. Together they must all work together to defeat the power hungry Ashka.

The shots were taken both in Australia which represented the "modern" world (Sydney, Blue Mountains) and in Poland where most pictures that featured the parallel world were shot (Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, Ogrodzieniec, Zawiercie, Czocha Castle).

Spellbinder was followed by, Spellbinder: Land of the Dragon Lord, in which Heather Mitchell reprises her role as Ashka.

Spellbinder: Land of the Dragon Lord is a teen, preteen and children's television series, and a sequel to Spellbinder. Both series deal with children travelling between parallel universes, although the only common characters between the two series are Ashka (Heather Mitchell), and her sidekick Gryvon (Rafał Zwierz). It was also novelized by the creators, Mark Shirrefs and John Thomson.

Summary: The Morgan Family is on vacation -- they choose to camp out in the ""Bush"" For a couple of weeks to have some real family time. The Morgans have 2 kids Kathy and Josh. Josh pulls a prank on Kathy and she runs off. In the Land of the Dragonlord scholar Meck has finished his latest invention -- a trans dimensional boat -- a boat in which he believes if he sets the musical jewels to the correct settings it will allow him to use the frequency to transport himself to parallel worlds. He does this against the Dragonlords orders. He tries it out anyways and finds himself in another world. Kathy is still angry at Josh -- she sees a light appear out of nowhere on the lake. She goes to investigate only to see a chinese looking man next to a weird boat. after an accidental scare scholar meck and Kathy get transported to another dimension - a dimension unknown to them -- the parallel universe of the Spellbinder!

The series was filmed on location in Australia ("Kathy's world" and one other parallel worlds similar to hers), China ("Sun's world") and Poland ("Ashka's world", as well as two other parallel universes). The show was a joint production between studios in the three countries, although the script and concept came from Australia, and the spoken language is English.

The series is fast-paced and there are usually new challenges for the characters in each episode, which are solved through cleverness and wits. As with most children's shows, most of the adventure is headed by children (Kathy is in her middle-teens), although Ashka, Kathy's parents, and the scientist Mek are adults.

  • Thank you, I really like the story line, and I am going to watch it just as soon as it stops downloading. Thanks again.........Elaine

  • I saw this when it came out and really enjoyed it.   My mother used to like it even though her eyesight wasn't too good by then.    (I used to tell her what was happening if necessary.)

Back then Australia made a whole string of TV serials for the teenage audience.    Thunderstone and Ocean Girl and Girl From Tomorrow come to mind.

    • Thanks for the info on other shows.  I will check to see if I can find them.

  • Thanks, never seen any of these !!

    • That is one reason I like the internet.  I have been several times over the years that I discovered movies and tv shows from other countries that I really liked but would have never had the chance to watch because they are not shown in the States.  This particular show was shown on the mouse channel in the past.  Never saw it on the mouse channel but someone mentioned the show to me when my kids were growing up.  Cheers!
