A scatterbrained socialite hires a vagrant as a family butler...but there's more to Godfrey than meets the eye. My Man Godfrey is a 1936 American comedy-drama film directed by Gregory La Cava. The screenplay was written by Morrie Ryskind, with uncredited contributions by La Cava, based on 1011 Fifth, a short novel by Eric Hatch. The story concerns a socialite who hires a derelict to be her family's butler, only to fall in love with him, much to his dismay. The film stars William Powell and Carole Lombard.
This is a madcap screwball comedy, so 1930s with a central Dramatic plot that has many social overtone. Layered on this Dramatic plot is a comedy with so many oddball charcters and hysterical happenings some bordering on slapstick.
The characterizations are superb and finely interwoven. I had seen the movie before and can honestly say that the COLORiZATION ands depth to an already many layered comedy. Powell and Lombard act so superbly that at times I found myself forgetting that this was a fabrication and not real life.
