Have only heard first episode of the new series so far. Didn't feel it had quite the same air as the previous seasons but then this can happen when you have different writers working on the same character.
Similarly, I remember that I was often disappointed when the Inspector Morse television series did original stories that weren't based on Colin Dexter novels, because sometimes their writers may have been good scriptwriters but they weren't necessarily good mystery writers.

I think this is one of the better mystery series aired by the BBC. Maybe the fact the locale is set in modern day Ireland also helps.
