Life on a provincial Russian estate is thrown into turmoil by the visit of the ailing Professor Serebryakov and his beautiful young second wife, Yelena. The estate, which supports their urban lifestyle, is managed by Vanya, brother of the Professor's late first wife, with the help of his niece Sonya, the Professor's daughter by his first wife.
