The Shootist by Glendon Swarthout

By Glendon Swarthout, adapted by Nick Perry

Brian Cox and Michelle Fairley star in an adaptation of one of the best Western novels, about the last surviving gunfighter in a vanishing American West.

The Shootist is John Bernard Book; he rides into El Paso in the year 1901 to be told by a doctor that he has a terminal illness. As word spreads that the famous assassin has reached the end, an assortment of vultures gather to feast upon his corpse. Books outwits them all by selecting the where, when, and manner of his death.

Like all westerns, The Shootist is a morality tale, but as much as it is a Western, this is also a detailed and absorbing portrait of a man coming to terms with cancer, and as his health deteriorates, so do his options. It’s the death not just of a man, but of an era. This is the end of the Old West.

This classic, Spur Award-winning novel was chosen by the Western Writers of America as one of the best western novels ever written. It is on almost every list of top 10 western novels. Famously, the novel spawned a 1976 movie adaptation starring John Wayne – his final role – and influenced Clint Eastwood to direct the iconic Unforgiven more than 10 years later. This story of a gunman's last days inspired two revered stars to deliver what many consider their finest performances.
