The Railway Children is the story of a family’s upheaval when they move from London to the countryside, after their father, who works with the Foreign Office, is falsely accused of spying and is imprisoned. At the time the novel was written the Russo-Japanese War was in full flow. The children, Roberta, Peter and Phyllis, befriend an elderly gentleman who daily catches the 9.15am train at the local station and is able to help clear their father’s name, resulting in a touching family reunion.

A family's sudden upheaval becomes bearable for three children when they discover a railway near their new home.
2. Rescue
Roberta, Phyllis and Peter jump to the rescue as Mother falls ill and a Russian turns up at the station.
3. Avalanche
An avalanche poses a problem on the line and even a fishing trip takes a dramatic turn.
4. Father
The children help out when a paper chase goes wrong - and Roberta learns the truth about her father.
