The Charge of the Boy's Brigade by Ronnie Smith

Ronnie Smith 's affectionate play is set in the early 1950s with a group of friends facing National Service.

He has been a playwright since 1966 & has also written under the names of John Naismith and Robin Smyth.(See A Craving for Gold in Whodunnit Discussions).

Anson (Bob) Roberts has kindly offered to post the sequel; Cherries Hung with Snow (2000). Keep an eye out for it.

  • As an aside, there is an episode of The Fall of the Mausoleum Club that is also entitled "The Charge of the Boy's Brigade"

  • I have the sequel if you want it.

    The title is from Housman's A Shropshire Lad:

    Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
    Is hung with bloom along the bough,
    And stands about the woodland ride
    Wearing white for Eastertide.

    Now, of my threescore years and ten,
    Twenty will not come again,
    And take from seventy springs a score,
    It only leaves me fifty more.

    And since to look at things in bloom
    Fifty springs are little room,
    About the woodlands I will go
    To see the cherry hung with snow.
