A drama set in Cumbria on the nearly lawless Anglo-Scottish border in the 1590s.

Young Lady Margaret Dacre was brought up in the genteel fashion at the court of Queen Elizabeth I. When her father is murdered, she inherits his lands in the English West March and is plunged into a world where violence and raiding are commonplace.

Memorable for its powerful characters: headstrong Lady Dacre, who finds Border ways incomprehensible; Archie Waitabout, the irrepressible reiver with his pride and his unconventional but curiously compelling moral code; and the narrator, a good and bewildered Jesuit priest whose conventional faith is sorely shaken by the Border's strange code of honour.

  • This brought back memories for me.

When I saw the name of Laurence Payne I could see him in my mind's eye as Sexton Blake. Hard to think it was all those years ago.

  • Thanks, Rick, for the interesting listen!!!   :)
