  • Hi David:

Excellent production by the BBC's Saturday Night Theatre. Many of these plays have been lost or the original tapes were thrown in the dustbin. Thanks to radio collectors we may enjoy some of these old Saturday Night Theatre productions as well as many other BBC radio broadcasts.

Here is the description for those who are not familiar with the story.

    Summary

Harold Brighouse's 1915 play is set in Salford, Manchester, during Victorian times. Obstinate boot-shop owner Horatio Hobson dominates both his employees and his three daughters, only bothering to enquire about his meals before heading to the local public house for ale. His eldest daughter Maggie becomes tired of his oafish behaviour and decides to rebel by seeking a husband. She sets her sights on shy Will Mossop, Hobson's master boot-maker, but is Will made of the right stuff to help Maggie realize her independence?

    • I saw this performed on stage a couple of years ago by the local Rep company. Looking forward to hearing the radio version, especially with Bernard Cribbins featured in the cast. A much loved face from many old movies and television shows of the period.
