Paid Servant

Paid Servant by E R Braithwaite [1962] Dramatised in 5 parts by Anne Edyvean Directed by Jessica Dromgoole First broadcast from 20080609 to 20080613 (Woman's Hour Drama) repeated on BBC7, 20081020 to 20081024 The drama, set in London in 1958, is based on Braithwaite's experiences as a black social worker in a racist society following the stint as a teacher that was the basis for his first novel, To Sir With Love. 20080609 Braithwaite is seconded to the London County Council as a child welfare officer, charged with cases involving 'his people'. 20080610 Braithwaite struggles in his role as child welfare officer to place Roddy, a boy of mixed race whose father is Mexican and whose mother is a prostitute. 20080611 Braithwaite encounters casual racism everywhere and bristles at all reference to 'his people'. Wherever it is absent, however, he celebrates. 20080612 Braithwaite is giving up hope of finding a family for abandoned Roddy, but nonetheless finds humanity in the oddest corners of his work. 20080613 Following a lead given to him by a chance encounter on a train, Braithwaite goes far beyond his remit to place Roddy with a good family. The range and diversity of his encounters as a child welfare officer lead him to redefine that irritating phrase 'my people'. E.R.
