  • On the assumption that this is the version recently rebroadcast:

    Lorna Doone
    R D Blackmore
    1997

A dramatisation of the novel set at the time of the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685, adapted by Barry Letts

Lorna Doone is a classic tale of love and adventure, which moves along at a cracking pace. John Ridd's father was murdered by the notorious Doone family, once a well to do family, but now outlaws who live in the Doone Valley. John meets and falls in love with Lorna Doone. She is destined to marry her cousin Carver Doone, but John Ridd helps her escape from Doone Valley.

The path of true love does not run smooth however and the story continues with tales of a lost heiress, the attempt by the Duke of Monmouth, the illegitimate son of Charles II, to seize the throne on his father's death, a wrongful charge of treason and the notorious Judge Jeffreys. All this, set in beautiful surroundings of England's Exmoor.

This version should not be confused with the 1977 dramatisation.
