Ann Vaux, a cousin of a conspirator, faces questioning in 1606, a year after the failure of the Gunpowder Plot.

Ann Vaux, cousin of the conspirator Robert Catesby, sets off from her Essex home on a pilgrimage to St Winifred's Well in Wales.

On the way, she visits some of the major catholic families in the country and arouses suspicion.

Robert Catesby returns to his mother's home at Ashby St Ledger's with the news that he has sold Bushwood Hall, apparently to raise money for his secretive activities.

Her servant, Martha Bates is convinced that her husband is mixed up in the plot as well.

Mary Habington lies in labour at Hindlip Hall when the news of the failure of the plot arrives.

Someone has sent a letter to Mary's brother, Lord Monteagle, telling him to avoid parliament.

Could she be the author of the letter?

The King's nine-year-old daughter is being held under the protection of Lord and Lady Harington at Coombe Abbey when a servant arrives with news that horses have been stolen and men are on their way to kidnap the Princess.

She must be taken away to a new place of safety.

It's the day of the execution and Martha Bates, wife of Catesby's servant Thomas Bates, is looking for a vantage point to see her husband being dragged through the streets on a hurdle to the gallows.

She pushes through the crowd in an attempt to seek his forgiveness.
