The medieval folk legend of Simon Magus, who makes a pact with the devil, forms the basis of Goethe's famous work. Disenchanted with the limitations of his academic knowledge, Dr Faust decides to study the arts of magic and to master the supernatural. Mephistopheles appears and offers Faust renewed youth and the power to experience the reality and the mystery of life and all the human suffering it will involve. Faust signs an agreement with the devil, but his soul will only be forfeited if ever his restless spirit is satisfied and content.
Louis Macneice with EL Stail translated this version and it was adapted for radio in by Anthony Vivis.
Goethe originally wrote this story in two parts, the first in 1808 and the second in 1831, with various revisions in between.
Cast includes Simon Callow as Faust, Ronald Pickup as Mephistopheles and Angharad Rees as Gretchen.

Thanks for this sterling biggie William.
Was listening to part one on Sunday morning - I thought it was great. I was convinced I had this in my collection and went to listen to some more and was disappointed it wasnt there. Delighted it's been uploaded. Many thanks :)
Thanks
I am currently uploading a collection of productions of Faust - both the Marlowe version and the Goethe one - to the server here. The productions include:
A short OTR version from a series called Anthology - low bitrate but listenable
David Mamet's Faustus (BBC 2005)
Goethe - Faust (BBC 2010, starring Derek Jacobi, Samuel West and Toby Jones)
Goethe - Faust (BBC 2014 rebroadcast of 1982 production, fully encoded at 128/44 with ID3 tags)
Christopher Marlowe - Doctor Faustus (BBC 2007)
Christopher Marlowe - The Tragical History of Dr. Faustus (BBC 1956)
Martin Jenkins - Faust (BBC 2008 parody starring Mark Gatiss as Mephistopheles)
and
Michael Payne - Lady Faustus (BBC 1985 with Rula Lenska as Lady Faustus)
As a teaser, while the files load, I've attached a short snippet of Dylan Thomas reading one of the most famous passages from the Marlowe version.
Files will take several hours to load (started 1720 EDT 13 October 2014)
Dylan Thomas - The Caedmon Collection, CD 08 - 18 - Dr. Faustus - A...

ROBERT or RICK - would one of you move the files intoa single folder - "Faust Collection" or something similar?
Thanks
Bob,
That is one place on Times past that I do not have the keys to. That is Robert's baby all the way. Just PM him and ask. Give him the group, titles you want in a folder and the name you want on the folder. Even though he is quite busy at work right now he will find time but the more info you give him denoting what you want done the less time it will take him and it will make the job easier. Nice set - Thanks --------------------- R
Many thanks!
William:
This is the 1982 BBC production, rebroadcast this week as part of a "German language" week.
I'll be posting another later (2010) production, probably tomorrow .
I'm curious about the file size. At 128kbps, a 340 minute production should be about 320 MB, not 160. Could this be 64kbps or is the file size misstated?
Bob
Interesting - Thank You Very Much! ------------ R
BTW - Part 2.1 is 64K and part 1 and 2.2 are 128K ----------------------------------- R
A 60 minute file at 128./44 stereo is 54-57 MB. Part 1of this set is 2:25. It's 132 MB all by itself. (I'm looking at my encode right now.) That leaves 28 MB for the other two parts? I don't think so. Something is not right. Either the bitrate is overstated OR the total file size is understated.
I'm finishing up the last part of the set right now, all at 128/44 of course. I'll post the set along with the other version tomorrow.
