Irene Nemirovsky's depiction of France under occupation, written in 1942 - months before her arrest and death in Auschwitz.

NOTE: This was the second book in Suite Francaise and follows some minor characters from the first book, A Storm In June, which was produced for the BBC as a 10-part reading.  Suite Francaise was planned as a 5-book series, but only two books were written due to the author's murder.

In the spring of 1941, a German regiment is billeted in a rural French village. In the Angellier household, two warring women pack away the good linen, lock up the piano and prepare to meet the enemy face to face.

The German officers settle into their billets. The villagers must find a way to live alongside them, however uncomfortable it proves.

Lieutenant Bruno von Falk brings something new into the shuttered and forbidding Angellier home.
