By Alan Bennett. Adapted by Honor Borwick.
The renowned playwright's idiosyncratic take on Shakespeare's Hamlet, originally written as an uncommissioned screenplay, and previously lost among the writer's papers archived at Oxford's Bodleian Library.
In a leafy, South London suburb, 15-year-old schoolgirl Harriet struggles with an essay on Shakespeare's view on the family as her ailing father Frank lies in his deathbed upstairs. In the aftermath of Frank's demise, the tale takes a strangely familiar turn, with characters reminiscent of the Bard's Claudius, Gertrude, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Polonius and Ophelia all playing their allotted parts.
