It's not too often that you need to split a file unless it happens to be a Drama on 3 which might be 3 hours and too large to upload. As Rosanna mentions, the maximum size of uploads to the Ning server is less than 100 MBs. When files are large, it is best to only upload one at a time.
A very easy program to split and re-joint files (mp3s or video) is MJ Split.
You can also the programme that Robert has mentioned. Both of these programme do not "re-encode" a file which is very important. Programmes like Sony Sound Forge, Audacity and others will re-encode your file and will degrade the file. You can use mp3directcut to edit most BBC or OTR files.
The max upload is about 100 mbs..or there abouts (maybe a little less). More than that and you'll be watching that little spinner spin forever.
Everybody has their favorite splitter..You can try Direct wav mp3 splitter or check out some others like that from cnet...but many are limited or a 30 day trial. Currently I'm using Slice......it works and it's free..
No need to be intimidated...nothing to it but a little patience..

Good luck, katy
Here is a post on a free splitter that works quiet well. Does not re-encode the split . https://timespast.ning.com/group/thelittleschoolhouseofotr/forum/top...
