Ning reduced file attachment size from 100MB to 7MB

Ning had the 7MB limit on file attachments in 2010, how we got by until now is a question. This 7MB limit on an upload will make that option pretty much useless for a majority of the type content shared here, based on what our members have uploaded in the past.

 

The posting of larger files will require hosting the file on an off-site location and add a link to the file with your post on Ning.

 

Some recommendations are:

 

http://www.mediafire.com  Upload speed is fast, and also allow password protected files if needed.

 

http://ge.tt/   I like what this service is doing, once your upload begins you get the "share download link" to use before your upload completes. There terms say files only good for 90 days, but I contacted them a while back and was told they have no plans to ever enforce that. I have files stored there for almost a year now and all are still available. No limits on file size.

 

http://www.4shared.com/  Popular site with 10GB free storage

 

Skydrive   Another favorite for me with 25GB free storage. A lot of options with your files available.

    Hi Robert and All:

     

    Recommendations

     

    Look for a site that offers easy uploading and downloading especially if you a large collection to share. The following site are designed specifically for this purpose. I would recommend the following based on my own personal experience:

     

    DO NOT use Rapidshare or Pando. A huge nightmare.

     

    MediaFire is excellent and fast. You can download files individually. However, their download manager (bulk file downloading) will only work with a paid account. I use their free account but you can purchase a nice package for $9.00/month. HERE

     

    4shared - free account (10GBs) per e-mail. Use the download manager to uploading quickly. The fast way to download is to transfer the files to your account. I do this all the time with large downloads. You then sign-in to the Desktop Manager and download all the files to your computer. I have three accounts (free) with 4shared (you must sign-in every month for each account) and files are still there from 2008.

    Premium 4shared is quite cheap at $6.50/month for one year which includes: volume traffic (bandwidth) 100GBs, high speed downloading, file size 5GBs, storage 100GBs, direct links for embedding in web pages. HERE

     

    You can also check out Sendspace Free (slow downloading) and Pro accounts ($55.00/year). HERE

     

    Megaupload with Download Manager (200GBs) HERE

     

    1 & 1 Web Hosting accounts are inexpensive and are excellent for high volume. I do a lot of uploading, therefore, I use this type of service. If you're interested just drop me a PM. This service was recommended to me by ansonroberts a couple of years ago. Excellent technical support.

      I'll just add that with Sendspace free the files are removed if they haven't been downloaded for 30 days.

      You can download files on your account yourself to keep them available but unless you only have one or two files on the account I don't think this can be considered a realistic solution.

        Hi Jake:

         

        Thanks for the additional info on the Sendspace free accounts.  This is why I mentioned the Pro account at $55.00 per year.  All the other free accounts will keep your files.  However, with 4shared (free) you must login every month.  So far I've had good luck with 4shared.

        I have my FTP account with unlimited uploading/downloading (bandwidth) so I'll be using it.  I can keep the files that I upload in my account indefinitely for members to access.

    I tend to react from the heart and then think.   At the time I felt 100% what I wrote in my opinion.  Now that I had time to think my feelings have changed.  We have been given a problem to solve.  How do we continue to adhere to Times Past's purpose and in what way do we have to change to continue to be us and change to meet the problems.  This is an obstacle, not a reason not to share here.  Three of us, Bobbie, Robert and I have proved that we can still use the system to deliver quality  Uploaders, get a free sharing space and contiue to give the best while we figure out what to do.  Do not quit posting here because files have to be rediculously small to meet 7 meg limits. That limit only forces us to regroup not quit posting here.  Read NING going to Pay as Robert has redirected.

      I see that the marketplace dictated this change due to the economy.  Hosting is going through a change and we have to also.  I really feel that NING letting us keep our library is a good thing .  Read more on the NING going to Pay thread.  No matter what happens , it's the people that count and we have attracted some of the best on the net. ------------  Rick

    I tried to upload a show but gave up when I had to continue transcoding to get within the 7meg strangulation limit,the file ended up at 24kmono, which for me is pure junk!

    I decided against uploading rather than give this poor quality file to anyone.

      Personally I don't agree with downgrading a file simply to fit on Times Past. Put it like this - if you managed to get the file down to under 7MB and then said that you had downgraded it and I wanted it I would ask if you could upload your original to a file host anyway.

      So what's the problem with finding a host? I've used Sendspace for a long time with no problems. Not the most popular but for all the hosts in Robert's post I've seen comments from people who have complained about them. I've never seen a complaint about Sendspace although I'm sure they exist. Also after 30 days if a file hasn't been downloaded it will be removed.

      I'm intrigued as I know you post in the Holmes group. I hope you do decide to use a host.

        Any Holmes things that I have are from my Dad, Lefevre of Montpellier.

        I would not soil Holmes by trying to make them fit here for the convenience of Ning's servers, rather, I would use a service. My major concern, however, is the shelf-life of a file on these services, they don't stand a chance of survival beyond a month or so (?) correct me if I am mistaken.

        I have no desire to sully any Holmesian related files by transcoding them, nay, nay that is paramount to treason in my book, besides, my Dad would not approve!

        one of Ning's concerns, no doubt, is the amount of huge files that are posted on other Ning pages, tons of p0rn and Blu-rays posted that take up gargantuan space that requires lots of maintenance as well.

          Thanks for replying Gyongi. I'm not sure about the shelf-life on these other hosts. It's interesting with regard to shelf-life that on Times Past I think it could well be an important aspect when choosing a file host. However on otrplus which uses basic forum software people put up links to files on file hosts but shelf-life is not a problem because if you find a link not working you only need to post and somebody will have the file and will be happy to upload it somewhere.

          Then again Ning / Times Past has advantages over the forum that otrplus uses. Just thinking about it all and my brain's starting to melt. It would be nice to see some more comments here about this limit.
