The decades between the end of the silent film era and the rise of TV, were golden years for the medium of radio in America.
In this three-hour showcase, Toby Hadoke introduces classic shows from the 1930s, 40s and 50s featuring the radio work of established stars such as Joan Crawford, Jack Benny and Vincent Price, as well as some lesser known, but no less important shows from the time.
The Golden Age of American Radio features six half-hour broadcasts :
• The Horrible Hamburger starring Vincent Price, a mystery from The Saint in 1950.
• Meridian 7-1212 by Irving Reis, from Columbia Workshop Presents in 1939.
• Jack Gives 50 cents to a Bum, starring Jack Benny with guest Mel Blanc,
comedy from The Jack Benny Program in 1950.
• Zero Hour by Ray Bradbury, from the science-fiction series X Minus One in 1956.
• Senator Theodore Bilbo, a polemic by Jack Webb from One Out of Seven in 1946.
• The Ten Years starring Joan Crawford, a melodrama from Suspense in 1949.
