LOL There are the open groups that all you have to do is join to contribute, but I think you can download and not be a member. The other is the private groups that are invisible to Google, bots, and other prying eyes. Those are limited in that you have request to join and then you are sent an invitation by the creator of the group. This is done at the group when you ask to join, if it's open you are immediately a member and if its private it can take up to 24-48 hours for the creator to get back to you.
