A Grand Day Out

From film school to the Oscars – This is the story of Wallace and Gromit's first adventure – A Grand Day Out.

Nick Park celebrates his award-winning creations, Wallace and Gromit, three decades after they were introduced to the world.

The animated duo’s story began when Nick was still a student at the National Film and Television School. When deciding what to do for his graduation project, Nick chose to animate a couple of characters he had been sketching - a man with a flat cap (inspired by Nick’s own father) and a cat (who would later become a dog).

When Nick showed what he was working on to Peter Lord and David Sproxton, creators of Morph and founders of Aardman Animations, they offered him some work in exchange for studio time.

Six years after production began, A Grand Day Out aired on Channel 4 on Christmas Eve 1990. Its 1993 follow up, The Wrong Trousers, went on to win over 40 awards - including the Academy Award for best animated short film.

From film school to the Oscars, this is the story of Wallace and Gromit's first adventure. It features interviews with Nick Park, Aardman Animation’s Dave Sproxton and Peter Lord, and Peter Gabriel, with whom Nick worked on the video for Sledgehammer.

We also hear an archive interview with Peter Sallis, in which the late actor remembers meeting a charming young Nick Park, who knew exactly what he wanted, telling him how to say every line.

This documentary first broadcast on BBC Radio Bristol on 4 November 2019 to mark the 30th anniversary of this short film’s release. A Grand Day Out premiered that same day in 1989 at the Bristol Animation Festival, before airing on Channel 4.

Produced by Tom Ryan for BBC Radio Bristol.
