My Tea Club will be getting together in early March for an evening of tea, crafting, & (at my suggestion) listening to Old Time Radio shows. In order to faccilitate some settling in, early conversation, possible early leaves, etc., I would like to structure the evening as follows:

7- 8 pm: Variety- comedy & music, either one 1 hr or two 1/2 hour shows
8- 9 pm: Mystery- a little bit of quality sleuthing, either one 1 hr or two 1/2 hour shows
9- 10 pm (for the hardy souls who can stay late): Supernatural- ghosts, horror, weird &/or scary, either one 1 hr or two 1/2 hour shows

While most of the members of my club are familiar enough w/ OTR to find the idea of an evening of it ENJOYABLE, I doubt any of them are even as well versed in it as I am, & I'm only a rank dilletante. So, oh Knowing Ones of the OTR 'Verse, can you recommend some knock-em-dead great shows that will get my friends interested enough to want to keep this as a tradition? Please feel free to suggest a single show or a co-ordinated menu, & I would be especially grateful if you could suggest shows I'm likely to find here, as my collection is on the small side. Thanks in advance! -Karen

Here's a trio to get things started........

The Fat Man - Brad gets drawn into a case when a friend sees a murder taking place through her window.
Suspense - William Powell as an escapee from Bellevue, out for revenge.
Rocky Fortune - Rocky is hired to babysit a theater critic. He keeps this job about as long as all the others. Starring Frank Sinatra

Excellent! You are a gentleman & a scholar, THANK YOU!
I might suggest you scan through the shows from my podcast. All selected for content and for the best quality I could find. You can sample listen to all the shows and screen pretty easy.

For specific shows it really comes down to where your interest lay.

But for my picks on variety/comedy Is "The Egg and I" here

or "Taking On City Hall" Here

or Breaking the Lease - I Love Lucy here
Hello, Karen. There's a huge amount of stuff posted here that I really don't know at all. However, I can recommend the following:

1. Variety: Something from "Spike Jones & the City Slickers" (in Music OTR) and/or something from "I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue" (in Comedy Tonight)

2. Crime/Mystery: Something from "Old Court Radio Theater" (in The Definitive Sherlock Holmes) and/or something from "Ellery Queen" (in Whodunnit)

3. Supernatural: "The Hex" from "M R James" and/or "The Monkey's Paw" from "Fear on Four" and/or "The Beast with Five Fingers" from "Fear on Four" and/or "The Judge's House" from "Fear on Four" (all in Radio Revival)

Have fun!

Roger
Excellent suggestions, thank you! Yes, maybe some MR James & some Man in Black. Wish I had a way to grab the new series. Mr. Gatiss does a great job & the one I was able to catch, "The White Hare," was excellent.

Thanks again, Roger!
Thanks to Semoshorts and Estleman, all five are downloadable from the Horror group pages. (I'm still finding it impossible to post recordings, so am getting Mr E to do it for me...)

EXCELLENT! Hmm, I thought I had "follow this" selected for that thread. Better go check it out. Thanks, dear!
Hi Karen:

Check these sites out:

First one is Shirley's site and has several shows for music and WWII. My page has 1940s music and some old radio shows -- theatre style.

Next is Ricky Lynn's site. If your looking for something already done My Page is currently running a large posting on Lucille Ball and her many radio shows.

Here at Timespast there are lots of shows within each category. The link below is for My Favorite Husband with Lucille Ball which was posted by Robert. Also the Music Group has lots to choose from.

Since you like WWII material, there is Everything For the Boys with Ronny Colman. Excellent variety show from the 40s. See posting at Shirley's site.

If you like swashbuckling stories I would recommend The Scarlet Pimpernel series from the 1950s. Excellent. Here is the link to these shows:

If you look under Romance on the radio you will also find Girl/Women Detective Radio Shows, i.e. Candy Mason, etc.

If I think of any more I'll add to list,

katy

P.S. Have a great time!

I love the sound of your Tea Party..........any scones with jam or cucumber sandwiches?
Jim
Oooh, thanks for the additional links. I look forward to checking them out.

This will be less of a tea PARTY & more of an "evening." Which means snackies rather than tea sandwiches, though we certainly have more traditional tea parties too. We're hoping to try a lot of different types of events this year- a picnic in the summer, field trips to check out local tea sellers, possibly an evening painting ceramic tea cups, afternoon tea @ affordable tea shops & maybe one big, fancy afternoon tea @ the St. Paul Hotel or Cedarhurst Mansion. There's an annual tea tasting @ Mrs. Kelly's teas where we try over 40 kinds of tea (we've got it down to a science!), & we have in-home tea-selling events too (one of our members is the local rep for "Let's Do Tea" & recently had a Chocolate Tea tasting). On the whole, we're a group who really likes TEA & everything else is just an excuse to drink, try, & buy more of it. ;-)
Sounds like alot of fun!!! I've started drinking more tea of late (don't tell coffee). My wife and I recently moved to Europe and go to an Herbalist. We've gotten calming tea, rose hip, a special blend to lower blood sugar. They work amazingly well.
My wife paints ceramic plates. They are absolutely beautiful!!! Very detailed. The only thing I'm able to paint is myself into a corner!!! Jim

PS..........What kind of snackies are we talking about????????
Craft-friendly snackies, which means not overly greasy & low stain potential if they spill or otherwise run off. Dried fruit, toasted pumpkin seeds, cookies, dry roasted nuts, etc.

Big time Boo-boo

I have messed around and deleted the ‘S’ folder from the library.  I am in the process of restoring it but it will take several days.  I’ll get Saturday Night Theatre up as soon as possible. jimb

To All Library Users

I have made a boo-boo somehow and accidentally moved all the ‘S’ Files to the bottom of the ‘R’ folder.  Until I can figure out a way to fix this, this is where you can find them. Anyone with a solution, mail me off-list. Thanks jimb
